So. Our brains. They’re pretty cool, right?
They are one of the most complex (and one of the largest) organs in our pretty little bodies. They help us think and move, breathe and sleep, balance, coordinate, and understand. They are also the recipient of countless headaches. Ow.
Our brains do so much for us (basically keeping us alive, and all). So, what can we do to repay them?
One of the easiest things anyone can do is to keep our brains well-fed. Below are three examples of utterly delicious brain-approved foods, and reasons why you should be nomming them.
- Oily fish such as salmon and mackerel contain a bunch of omega-3 fats that, trust me, your brain loves. It contains active forms of EPA and DHA fats. If your body is well stocked in those babies, they help to manage stress, and help with production of serotonin – you know, that happy brain chemical. Fish isn’t your thing? Nah prahb. You can get these same awesome fats from foods such as walnuts, soya beans, and pumpkin seeds too!
- Broccoli! Who would’a thought? We all know the broc has loads of vitamins and nutritional goodies, and that as a rule, green is good. It is a bangin’ source of vitamin k, too. That stuff helps your cognitive function and brain power! These little green trees also help to keep our memories sharp. Clearly, I need to eat this stuff by the pound!
I know I’m gonna hear a cheer around the world for this one. Coffee. You heard me right, my friends. A good ol’ cuppa joe made the list! Coffee is loaded with caffeine and antioxidants, both of which encourages a super happy brain. The caffeine alone makes you more alert, improves your mood (spouses and coworkers everywhere are grateful for this), and it gives you a heightened ability to concentrate!
Other brain-besties include: blueberries, black currants, turmeric, green tea, nuts, dark chocolate (yas!), tomatoes, eggs, and more! If we treat our brains nicely, we’ll be treated well in return! So hit the grocery store, people.
We have hungry, hungry brains.
